All I remember was shouting at the top of my lungs “MUM, DAD.” I scared the sh*t out of them I yelled so loud. They didn’t even know why I was so ecstatic. It took so long to sink in and to just say the words: “I did it. I don’t know how but I got a 99.95 ATAR”

Chemistry. More like Chem-mystery, amirite? 😹

For a lot of people, it's one of the most, if not the most dreaded subject, and as a prerequisite for medicine, it's also one of the most popular. So here are a few basic tips to help you succeed in Chem and hopefully increase your score

  1. Take detailed notes.
Regardless of whether you have photographic memory or 9 copies of the textbook, detailed notes are essential in such a pedantic and content filled subject, especially when it comes to revision time and you've forgotten what the catalyst for esterification is
  2. Understanding is paramount.
When it comes to Chem, memory is the easy part. When it comes to actual exam questions, you'll slowly start to realise that most of the questions are impossible without a thorough understanding of the subject. Make sure to understand rather than memorise
  3. Stay on top of things
Staying on top of things is absolutely crucial for Chemistry in year 12. It’s very easy to get bogged down whilst cramming for Chem since it is a memory and practice-intensive subject. The journey of Chem in year 12 is all about the progression from basics all the way to more in-depth content. And the course is designed for regular weekly study. So cramming really isn't all that effective especially once the going gets tough in the latter half of the year.
  4. Practice exams are key. When it comes to SAC and exam preparation, taking notes and revising the textbook is useless. Do as many relevant questions as possible, especially ones from last VCE exams as these focus on understanding, as I said previously, and are necessary to consolidate your understanding of topics
  5. Learn how to use the databook
You will rely heavily on the databook. Everything from the periodic table, observations, solubility tables, voltage potentials, and amino acid structures can be found in the databook. A top tip of mine is to have one databook throughout the year and annotate it with all the notes you need. That way you get used to having it with you and using it. When it comes to the final exam, your practice and memory will be enough to remember how to use the databook.

Chemistry doesn't have to be so difficult. Once you've got a good understanding of the subject content, you'll learn how to apply it to a myriad of scenarios by doing practice questions. So make sure you book a tutor Chemistry early on and focus on the one key thing that I zealously believe is the most important item on that list: UNDERSTANDING

As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me someone who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor

Manoj Arachige

Hello there!! I'm Manoj and I sold my soul to the devil in order to survive year 12. My mission is to make sure you don't have to do the same.

I graduated high school as the School captain and a Dux of my with a 99.95 ATAR and a study score of 50 in chemistry. I really enjoyed the subject, but hated studying.

Throughout year 12, I made it my goal to study as efficiently as possible, cutting all the unnecessary information from my learning, and focusing on only the important stuff so I wouldn't have to give up things I love like sport and having a social life. Once I graduated, I taught these methods to my students, and after a few years of being a "generalised" tutor who taught multiple subjects, I decided to really focus on the subject that I loved teaching and the subject that students love learning from me: Chemistry.

Nowadays I break my time up between studying the Doctor of Medicine at Monash, playing the guitar, and catching up with friends for a very generic avocado on toast.

Richard Bao

My name is Richard and I am currently studying a double degree in Commerce and Computer Science at UNSW.

After experiencing the mountain that is high school, I understand the difficulties of keeping up in class and school work. If you feel like you need an extra boost in math or science or are trying to achieve high marks, I can help you.

I believe that maths and science have always had a perception of being notoriously difficult to grasp for students. But from my experience, once you understand the most fundamental and basic concepts, it becomes fairly smooth-sailing. That’s why I focus on a fundamental and understanding-based approach rather than simply rote-learning concepts (believe me, that does not work). By sharing the understanding and passion that I gained, I aim to streamline schoolwork whilst also possibly allowing them to enjoy the subject as well!

I achieved an HSC All-Rounder which included subjects like:

Mathematics Extension 1 - 98

Mathematics Extension 2 - 97

Physics - 96

Chemistry - 98 (State Rank 13th in NSW. 100/100 in HSC Externals)

Outside school, I love to play basketball with friends and travel around great restaurants (especially ramen).

Thomas Whitelaw

Hi everyone! My name's Thomas and I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) at the Australian National University.

I've always had a passion for science and maths, but it wasn't until year 11 that I realised I also have a passion for teaching science and maths! I find the feeling of cracking a tough problem or having a tricky concept finally 'click' immensely satisfying, so helping my classmates have more of those 'aha!' moments seemed like a no-brainer.

I aim to help my students achieve a deep, intuitive understanding of the subjects they are learning, and maybe even enjoy them! Having spent too long being taught by nothing but rote memorisation and textbook questions, I know you can't teach by brute-force. My first step is always to make sure my students really get what they're learning — practice comes later.

I remember how hectic high school can be. In my final two years of high school I played drums and percussion in multiple community bands, held a causal job, and maintained a decent social life; all while devoting a fair bit of attention to school! Apparently I did something right, surprising myself by graduating as Dux of my high school with a 99.80 ATAR. So, my goal is to help you maintain that treasured school-life balance while achieving the results you want.

These days, when university isn't keeping me occupied I'm probably playing board games with friends, skiing, or playing drums!
