Chemistry. More like Chem-mystery, amirite? 😹

For a lot of people, it's one of the most, if not the most dreaded subject, and as a prerequisite for medicine, it's also one of the most popular. So here are a few basic tips to help you succeed in Chem and hopefully increase your score

  1. Take detailed notes.
Regardless of whether you have photographic memory or 9 copies of the textbook, detailed notes are essential in such a pedantic and content filled subject, especially when it comes to revision time and you've forgotten what the catalyst for esterification is
  2. Understanding is paramount.
When it comes to Chem, memory is the easy part. When it comes to actual exam questions, you'll slowly start to realise that most of the questions are impossible without a thorough understanding of the subject. Make sure to understand rather than memorise
  3. Stay on top of things
Staying on top of things is absolutely crucial for Chemistry in year 12. It’s very easy to get bogged down whilst cramming for Chem since it is a memory and practice-intensive subject. The journey of Chem in year 12 is all about the progression from basics all the way to more in-depth content. And the course is designed for regular weekly study. So cramming really isn't all that effective especially once the going gets tough in the latter half of the year.
  4. Practice exams are key. When it comes to SAC and exam preparation, taking notes and revising the textbook is useless. Do as many relevant questions as possible, especially ones from last VCE exams as these focus on understanding, as I said previously, and are necessary to consolidate your understanding of topics
  5. Learn how to use the databook
You will rely heavily on the databook. Everything from the periodic table, observations, solubility tables, voltage potentials, and amino acid structures can be found in the databook. A top tip of mine is to have one databook throughout the year and annotate it with all the notes you need. That way you get used to having it with you and using it. When it comes to the final exam, your practice and memory will be enough to remember how to use the databook.

Chemistry doesn't have to be so difficult. Once you've got a good understanding of the subject content, you'll learn how to apply it to a myriad of scenarios by doing practice questions. So make sure you book a tutor Chemistry early on and focus on the one key thing that I zealously believe is the most important item on that list: UNDERSTANDING

As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me someone who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor

99.95

ATAR

Hello there!! I'm Manoj and I sold my soul to the devil in order to survive year 12. My mission is to make sure you don't have to do the same.

I graduated high school as the School captain and a Dux of my with a 99.95 ATAR and a study score of 50 in chemistry. I really enjoyed the subject, but hated studying.

Throughout year 12, I made it my goal to study as efficiently as possible, cutting all the unnecessary information from my learning, and focusing on only the important stuff so I wouldn't have to give up things I love like sport and having a social life. Once I graduated, I taught these methods to my students, and after a few years of being a "generalised" tutor who taught multiple subjects, I decided to really focus on the subject that I loved teaching and the subject that students love learning from me: Chemistry.

Nowadays I break my time up between studying the Doctor of Medicine at Monash, playing the guitar, and catching up with friends for a very generic avocado on toast.

98.55

ATAR

Hi! I'm Yaroslava but you can call me Yarra.

I graduated from Somerville House with an ATAR of 98.55 and am now studying Computer Science and Law (Honours) at the University of Queensland. I did Year 12 under the new QCE system during COVID, so I definitely learned a thing or two about studying smart, not hard.

The subjects I did were English, Maths Methods, Chemistry, Physics, Modern History, Chinese and Russian. I genuinely loved learning content for both STEM and humanities once I realized all the anxiety around long study hours was really unnecessary. I received 99/100 in English, 94/100 in Physics, the highest score in Queensland in Russian and academic commendation from the QCAA.

My teaching is enthusiastic, and my style is concept-centered. I make sure you understand the underlying ideas and relationships within the subject using clear notes and explanations before doing practice questions. While memorization is undeniably a part of some subjects, you'd be surprised how much can be logically explained away instead of cramming. My aim is to make sure you understand everything you need to know in the long term and tailor my teaching to you: the student.

I'm keen to help you achieve **your ** goals, whether it's learning content, assignment help, improving study techniques, or fostering a life-long love of learning!

Should I get a Chemistry tutor?

Getting a tutor for any subject is not something that can be answered definitively. It is completely dependent on whether you need that extra help or not. Chemistry tutoring is a great way to get ahead of what you are learning in school, or it may be a way for you to wrap your head around those concepts that don’t stick the first time you learn them. You might just get Chemistry tutoring solely to run through practice questions together and refine your approach. Ultimately, the decision to get Chemistry tutoring should be based on your needs for the subject.

What makes a good Chemistry tutor?

A good Chemistry tutor should be someone who can explain the concepts taught in Chemistry in a clear and concise method to help you understand the course well. The tutor should also be someone who can guide you through common questions that are asked in Chemistry and help you structure the way you answer questions more effectively. As with any other tutor, they should be someone who can help you reach your maximal potential. However, most importantly, your tutor should be passionate about teaching, and passionate about Chemistry. This passion is what would ultimately make the tutes engaging and fuel your desire to learn more about the subject.

What skills can a Chemistry tutor teach me?

Succeeding in Chemistry has two stages. Stage one involves learning the content well. Stage two involves understanding how to use the content you have learnt to answer questions, whether this is in your SACs or at the end-of-year exams. A Chemistry tutor can not only assist you in learning the content but also in knowing the buzzwords to include in your answers and how to structure your responses in a better way.
