As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me a wace french tutor who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor
“I got the top mark for my SAC which was really nice, and I think that’s all because of my tutor”
Medha / Year 12 Student
“It's been absolutely fantastic and it's just been a very positive environment for learning”
Amanda / Parent of a Year 7 Student
Hi, my name is Emma Ashley and I graduated in 2020 with a 99.45 ATAR. Since then, I have gone on to study Law with Honours and PPE, politics philosophy and economics, at the Australian National University. I have been involved with KIS Academics in many capacities over the last 2 years, namely as the NSW state consultant, Events manager, Sales Manager, English Advanced Online Course developer and the Productivity Planner creator.
I have been tutoring since I finished my HSC, with approximately 20 hours of lessons every week. This means across the past (close to) 3 years I have tutored 60+ students … and counting! Why you may ask? Because I genuinely love sharing knowledge with others. There is nothing more valuable to me than seeing a student become excited to learn, the ‘ah ha’ moment where they finally understand or when they tell me about an amazing grade they just received.
My role as a tutor is to facilitate learning in a safe, comfortable environment, whilst focusing on areas of weakness and improving exam technique, things often over looked in the classroom. I intend for students to take agency over their learning and therefore ensure that they are able to guide lessons to suit their needs at the time, as usually the student knows what they need to focus on better than anyone else. My assistance and guidance extends beyond the classroom as I am always happy to communicate with my students if they have urgent questions or would like feedback before our next lesson.
Thank you for taking the time to read a little bit about me and I am excited to hear from you about your study needs.
Hey guys! I’m Elena and I’m here to say: I get it. VCE can be difficult. So no matter whether you’re aiming for the top or just trying to survive this crazy thing we call school, my ultimate mission is to help make things easier for you. I can be your certified secret weapon!
Here’s a little bit about why:
🏅Graduated with a 99.60 ATAR
🏅Scored a raw 50 in English
🏅Premier’s Award for VCE English
📈 Over 600 hours of tutoring experience
📈 Over 5 years as a Saturday School classroom teacher
📈 Over 30 previous students
📈 Over 25 different texts taught
I know, I know. There are a lot of high achievers out there. And I am the first to admit that having good grades does not make someone a good teacher. I’ve been teaching for a long time (and have studied teaching at Monash) and I can tell you that communication skills and a high EQ are the important ingredients. That being said, please don’t think of me as just another teacher!
As we at KIS like to say, tutors should feel like ‘genius best friends’, and that is absolutely my tutoring philosophy.
When I’m not tutoring, I work part time as a kindergarten teacher (is it harder to teach teenagers or three year olds? 🤔that’s been my ongoing question!) - and as any parent can tell you, young children can be brutal! One thing I’ve learned definitively is that students will never learn from someone they don’t like. Hence, ‘genius best friends’. I prioritise getting to know you, your likes and dislikes, your ‘learning turn off’ (the thing that makes someone hate coming to class)… because I believe that knowing your personal context behind why you’ve started tutoring is vital to making sure you actually get something out of it.
I don’t want to be just another authority figure, and I don’t believe in handing you copious amounts of homework when you might already be struggling to stay on top of your regular schoolwork. Even the best multitaskers struggle with having multiple different streams of learning at once (between orchestra, theatre, leadership roles, academic competitions, public speaking competitions, dance, a part time job and debating, I definitely learned this the hard way in high school!).
I absolutely do give out recommended reading and exercises, and have an extensive bank of practise prompts, sample essays, study guides and other resources to share if you want them! But I’m not going to crucify you if you don’t do it.
Rote learning is very different to core conceptual understanding. Cultivating that is my goal.
Ultimately, what I’m saying is that I know what it’s like to be a student! I still am one (at university). I try to tutor the things students need to know, in a way that you can understand it. I also received tutoring while I was in high school, so I understand where you’re coming from.
Therefore as a tutor, my ideals are to combine personal experience as both the student and the teacher to create a balanced, tailored, welcoming and relatable tutoring process for you.
What I offer:
✅ Regular lessons according to your schedule (weekly, fortnightly, 30, 60, 90mins…whatever you feel!)
✅ Ad hoc lessons before SACs or exams (there’s always time to improve!)
✅ Essay marking for my students (with a 36 hour return policy)
✅ Independent, personalised curricula (if you want to be ahead of your class / do something different)
Aside from the content itself, as a VCE survivor I am able to help out with general tips and tricks- all the things that will ultimately help you help yourself!
My role as a tutor can be summarised in one word - I am a de-stresser.
So whatever that means to you, wherever your stress is building up - let me know and I’d love to help.
I left high school happy with my six years there - a feeling which I hope to impart to you. Whether that means improved grades, better studying skills or a greater enjoyment of a subject, I will be there to help that happen and have some laughs along the way!
Hi! I'm Huey and I graduated as the 2020 dux of St Kevin's College with a 99.90 ATAR and perfect 50s in English and Chemistry. I was awarded the Premier's Award in Chemistry, placing me among the top 4 scorers in Victoria. I'm pleased to be offering tutoring for English, Chemistry and Maths. Currently, I'm in my third year of Medicine at Monash University.
Why you can trust me:
As a tutor, I provide:
The two things I emphasise most are understanding the content and conveying your understanding through well-structured answers. I really enjoy tutoring you guys and I hope it shows in my teaching. Looking forward to working with you.
The answer to this question is not as black and white as you may hope for it to be. Getting an English tutor would be dependent on how well your school teacher guides you in English and also on whether you feel like you need some additional assistance with English. This could be either due to your teacher’s guidance not being enough or due to you wanting to push your English skills further. Getting an English tutor is not the only way to succeed in VCE English, but tutoring can help you reach your true potential in your writing, creativity and ideas. For those who are not in VCE at the moment, an English tutor does have the ability to allow you to improve your writing style and analysis of texts in preparation for VCE.
You would want to look for a tutor who has experience with the texts you are analysing in English. A tutor who knows the texts well will be able to assist you in developing your understanding. You should also seek someone who can clearly and effectively communicate to you, in a way that is easy for you to understand. These criteria can mean different things for different students, so finding a tutor who suits your style of learning and engagement is important. A good English tutor would also have a personalised approach to tutoring English. The tutor would cultivate your writing style and allow you to create the best work that you can create.
The skills you learn from an English tutor vary depending on your stage in your study of the English language. This may be improving your sentence structure to make your writing more cohesive. It may be assisting with word choice to make sure that you can convey your ideas more succinctly. It may be helping you look at the text from a different perspective and cultivate new ideas. These are all skills that an English tutor can help you with, which your school teacher may not have the time to individually assist you with.
