Selective school tutors to get into your dream high school 🏫

So… you or your child are considering a selective high school. And why wouldn’t you? Selective schools best place students to achieve academically by offering a fast-paced environment for students to learn alongside like-minded, high-achieving peers. Or maybe you’re considering trying for a merit scholarship to a tuition-based high school, which creates an affordable alternative to the expensive fees of private school education.

Selective schools accept students based on their academic performance on a standardised exam – the ‘entrance exam’. The exam assesses a range of skills across various disciplines in order to identify the highest-performing students in each cohort.

Depending on which state you are from, the exam will be formatted slightly differently. However, each exam can essentially be broken down into four sections:

  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Mathematics
  4. General Ability

Familiarise yourself with the structure of the particular exam you will be undertaking. Are the questions multi-choice? How many questions are in each section? This will ensure your exam preparations are relevant and targeted.

Here are a few general tips for studying for the exam:

  • Get a selective school tutor! A tutor can help to familiarise you with the exam content and show you strategies for tackling challenging questions. In many cases, they are former selective school students who can offer personal advice and wisdom.
  • Practice, practice, practice! Complete past papers in test conditions, under a time limit. By simulating the exam environment, you will build up your confidence for when the real exam arrives.
  • Read the question! Ensure you know exactly what it is the question is asking you to do (and then do it)! Too often, students misunderstand the meaning of a question and lose easy marks.

If you ever need some assistance with your studies or subject specific help, KIS Academics selective school tutors have a thorough understanding of the entrance exams and can assist in understanding curriculum requirements. Our tutors are able to provide materials and teaching on how to prepare for these scholarship tests thoroughly. As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me someone who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor

Hello! My name is Sonia Nazarian I am a student at Macquarie University, studying a Bachelor of Applied Finance. Although I am pursuing a career in the corporate world, teaching holds a special place in my heart and will always be a job I love doing due to the delight passing down my skills and knowledge to students of all ages brings me.

As a tutor, I am very patient and understand that all students learn at different paces. I have a very flexible teaching style, developed from three years of tutoring experience, and always personalise each session to fit the needs of my students.

As an all-rounder student, I value education and believe it is pivotal in the development of children, especially in their adolescent years. However, I strongly believe that a student’s intelligence cannot be entirely measured through their grades. Hence, I strive to motivate my students through setting personalised goals which prioritise academic progression but do not rely on achieving a certain mark.

I specialise in teaching Mathematics, English, Ancient History, and Selective School Preparation. I love essay writing and analysing texts. Furthermore, I have a deep interest in Ancient History as it sparks my curiosity, helping me learn new things every day. Additionally, Mathematics (Including but not limited to calculus, algebra, functions, integration, probability, statistics, and finance) is my strongest subject and one of my favourite things to teach!

My favourite part of tutoring is watching students grow into confident individuals who are prepared for challenges that they might face in the next stages of their life. That “Aha!” moment where a student finally understands a concept that they previously did not motivates me to continue improving my teaching skills and methods, inspiring me to continue learning new things every day.

Hi, I’m Charlie! I’m a student at the Australian National University doing a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English.

I am passionate about getting to know my students and working closely with them to create carefully tailored lessons that target key concerns. This understanding of individual student needs allows me to effectively teach concepts, along with build confidence and organisational skills.

As someone that has always engaged in extracurriculars throughout high school and continues to do so in university, I firmly believe that the key to achieving your goals is maintaining a healthy study/life balance. By teaching my carefully refined study skills and learning methods I will ensure that school does not seem too daunting and will help you to maintain high marks whilst leaving time for other activities.

I enjoy working with students of all ages and have an understanding of what each year group focuses on in regards to Mathematics, English, and Legal Studies. I am also experienced in helping students to prepare for the Selective School Entry Exam.

I’d love to get to know you and your learning needs in our free 30-minute study skills consultation :)

Hi there! I'm a graduate of Bachelor of Biomedical Science with a 86.95 WAM and a 7-point GPA of 6.84, with three years of personalised tutoring experience.

Tutors become exemplary role models when they effectively teach, inspire, and engage students simultaneously.

On top of inspiring with my passion for my subjects, I prioritise my students' understanding of foundational knowledge. From personal experience, a strong foundation paves the way to the comprehension of more difficult concepts. I actively make sure they understand what I teach by identifying and clarifying all misconceptions.

With a fluid tutoring style to accommodate various learning preferences, I provide a flexible environment for my students. My tuition style breaks down the image of the traditional classroom. I actively engage students with revision quizzes and comprehensible analogies in a friendly judgment-free environment where students can ask questions without hesitation.

From my experiences, light smiles alongside genuine praises effectively cultivates students' confidence and diligence. For some, such praise and encouragement is the nudge they need to excel. Many tutors teach, but few tutors understand their students' needs, and therefore the effectiveness of their service.

Some of my passions in life: chess, badminton, volleyball, skating, cycling, tutoring, language acquisition, and desktop customisation. Feel free to chat with me about any of them!

Should I get a selective school tutor?

Due to the highly competitive nature of the selective school exam, they often examine content that would be above the level of a year 8 student. This is especially true for the Maths exam. Because of this, getting a tutor to help you extend your knowledge and skills on these topics that may not have been covered at your school would be especially useful.

What makes a good selective school tutor?

The most important aspect to any tutor is their ability to make their tutes engaging. This only comes if the tutor is passionate about what they are teaching. They should make the student feel empowered with their education and invigorate them to strive for more. A good selective school tutor should also be able to explain concepts that may be out of the scope of a year 8 student in an easy-to-understand way to allow their student to perform to their best in the exam. Likewise, these exams are time-pressured and may be one of the first experiences some students may have of a time-pressured exam. Due to this, the tutor should also guide their students on how to most effectively manage their time in the exam and the tips and tricks they have to answer the questions quicker and more accurately.

How can a tutor prepare me for a scholarship exam?

Getting a scholarship to a school can be a very competitive process and the guidance of a tutor can be invaluable for success. A scholarship tutor can firstly teach you the content that is required for the exams in the different sub-categories that they have. After this, the key is to work on exam-specific tips and timing strategies, which you can develop with your tutor.
