All I remember was shouting at the top of my lungs “MUM, DAD.” I scared the sh*t out of them I yelled so loud. They didn’t even know why I was so ecstatic. It took so long to sink in and to just say the words: “I did it. I don’t know how but I got a 99.95 ATAR”

From Years 5-10, students mainly focus on general English, Maths and Science.
In year 11 and 12, students complete subjects as part of their ATAR studies, which is the system used in New South Wales to get admission into university.
HSC subjects and subject performance is used to calculate your.
Exactly how the mythical HSC works is a constant source of confusion for parents and students - sometimes even for those currently undertaking HSC subjects. Hopefully all of the following information - explained for you by a HSC survivor! - will clarify the key points of confusion.
The HSC works on a “units” system. Most classes are two units (English, Math, Chemistry etc), but extension subjects are only one unit (English Extension, Math Extension etc).
In year 11 you are required to take a minimum of 12 units (for most people this is 6 subjects).
In year 12 you are only required to take 10 units. Regardless of how many units you take, only the 10 best units will count towards your ATAR. Each unit is worth 50 marks and therefore for the standard 2 unit course you will receive a mark out of 100.
For every course, regardless of the units, your final grade is made up of:
Except it’s slightly more complicated than that. Your internal marks are never given to NESA (The New South Wales Education Standards Authority). What gets entered is your rank within your cohort at your school.
These two systems are used to calculate your final ATAR which you receive at the end of Year 12.
The HSC system can be quite complex, and understanding what's going on can be very daunting for new students and parents. If you ever need some assistance with HSC studies or subject specific help, KIS Academics tutors have a thorough understanding of their subjects and can assist in understanding curriculum requirements. Our tutors are able to provide materials and teaching on how to prepare for HSC internal and external assessments. Learn about our HSC tutoring and book a free study skills consultation with a KIS Academics tutor.
As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me someone who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor
Hi there! I’m Ina, a graduate of Sydney Girls High School.
Year 12 in the time of COVID was definitely tough, and keeping focused on study during quarantine and online classes was pretty much impossible. So, if there’s one thing I learnt from sitting home alone trying to study during my final year of school, it was how to study smart not hard.
I graduated with a 99.6 ATAR, as an all-rounder (band 6 in all of my units) with a 3rd in NSW state rank for French Extension. I have a good idea of how to succeed in your subjects in any grade(especially with the daunting new syllabus), but natural talent isn’t the secret to acing school; no one wakes up knowing about modernist literary movements and statistical trends in mathematics.
I’ve been a private tutor for over 4 years, so I know that everyone has different goals, learning styles and struggles. That’s why I’m here to support your learning and help you feel good about your progress and achievements, without having to give up your social life or burn out. At school I studied Advanced English, Maths Extension1, French (Continuers and Extension), Legal Studies and Latin. I truly loved all of my subjects, and I’m confident and excited to help you feel as good about your studies as possible.
Now that I’m out of high school, I’m studying a Bachelor of Arts/Laws at the University of Sydney (with a major in Spanish and minor in International Relations). I’m playing soccer with my high-school team, not doing much reading for leisure (law has me reading too much already), and searching for a new tv show or movie to watch.
Hey, I'm Abby! I've been tutoring since I was in high school myself, and have always loved seeing students grow and achieve their potential.
As someone who never thought they'd actually get into their dream university degree, I can vouch for how consistency, motivation and application go a long way in reaching your goals. With determination and support from others, I graduated with a 99.65 ATAR and a place in the Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Sydney.
My aim is to help guide and encourage you academically, without having to sacrifice your passions or social life. Throughout my entire high school journey, I kept debating, horse riding, playing netball and spent as much time as I could with my peers (despite the disaster that was 2020!) These are still my favourite hobbies to this day, alongside learning more about animals and science.
Hi everyone! I'm Josh, a maths and physics student at ANU in Canberra. I graduated Sydney Grammar School with a 99.85 ATAR and a state rank in Extension German, and currently have a High Distinction average at university. So far, I've successfully assisted over 10 students in subjects including maths, physics, French and German.
I'm deeply passionate about the subjects that I tutor, and believe that such a passion for one's studies is key to academic success. In maths and physics, I possess wide-reaching knowledge due to my university studies, allowing me to provide a greater level of context and clarity to high school material than most tutors can.
When I'm not tutoring, I love socialising, learning foreign languages, and playing cricket and piano. Probably like yourself (or your child), I don't have my whole future career mapped out - but I'd like it to be in something where I'm constantly learning new things, and making a real difference to people's lives.
