...and more!
1: Learn actively and be consistent 🧠
What comes to mind when I say the word ‘revise?’ Most people would think of reading their notes or revisiting slides to retain information. Well you might be shocked to hear that those are highly ineffective strategies as they’re ‘passive learning’ strategies - where the learner simply tries to absorb information. You might ask, isn’t that what we are supposed to do to prep for assessments? No, because passive learning doesn’t allow you to critically think about the content, ie know why you’re doing what you’re doing, and make connections to other content.
2. Look through worked solutions 💬
Just going over questions is not enough, because you need to be correcting any mistakes you have. To do that, you need to go over worked solutions.
Also, worked solutions help you figure out what the marking scheme is, so it makes it very easy for you to know what markers look for and how you should be structuring your working out.
Sometimes, if you are lucky, teachers have a copy of worked solutions to general textbooks and old assessments. If they don’t that’s okay. Your past practice papers will always come attached to a set of worked solutions. These two things should be your reference guide for how to structure your responses. Sometimes you might get the answer correct but may have missed a step meaning you would not have gotten maximum marks.
3. Your calculator is your best friend 📲
In most maths assessments, you will have access to both your calculator a reference book, but the questions will be a lot more complex so you need to be able to utilise your calculator well. Adding shortcuts can save you a load of time, binding things like the trigonometric functions (sin, cos, tan), e^x, Define f(x)=, f(, 𝝿 and a given that symbol (this symbol | ) can be the difference in getting that bit of extra time to make sure you finish your assessment and catch any mistakes. It is also good if you know your shift key bindings off the top of your head as it will save even more time (but don’t fret if you don’t, you can write them in your reference book!).!
