From Years 5-10, students mainly focus on general English, Maths and Science.
In year 11 and 12, students complete subjects as part of their ATAR studies, which is the system used in Queensland to get admission into university.
QCE subjects and subject performance is used to calculate your ATAR.
For most Year 11s and 12s, their parents and tutors, the QCE is something to await with apprehension and dread. Not to mention the fact that the QLD system has recently undergone a bit of a “facelift” in 2020, so there are some important changes you need to know.
Let’s break down the Queensland Certificate of Education and what it entails, so you (whether you are a student, parent, or tutor) are ready for the rollercoaster ride that is Year 12.
In the QCE system, subjects are split up into 2 categories, general and applied
As mentioned above, you need a minimum of 20 credits, meaning 5 general subjects, or 4 general subjects and 1 applied subject. Alternatively, some students opt to undertake a diploma or certificate during Year 11 and 12, such as the Diploma of Business, which can also contribute towards their QCE/ATAR certification.
All students must successfully complete an English subject to receive their QCE and ATAR.
For the remaining 5 or 6 subjects you select for your senior studies, there is a broad range of options available, including Maths, Science, Commerce, Arts, Humanities, Languages and more.
If you are aiming to get into a particular university course, such as Medicine, it’s crucial that you look into any subject prerequisites each university requires, as this can affect what courses you will be eligible for.
Each subject has a unique assessment style and structure, but all subjects will have two components: internal and external assessment.
Internal assessments refer to any exams/assignments that are formulated and assessed by individual schools, which are then sent off to the QCAA (QLD’s education authority) for external confirmation. For most subjects, internal assessments comprise 75% of the total subject weighting (excluding Maths and Science subjects which are 50%).
External assessments are the big bad final exams that everyone stresses about at the end of the year. These exams are written and marked by the QCAA themselves, and usually amount to 25% of a subject’s total grade (excluding Maths and Science again, which are 50%). These invigilated exams are held in a 4-week exam period during the end of the school year. Each subject exam across the state is held at the same time so you are all in it together (couldn’t resist the high school musical reference).
The QCE ATAR system can be quite complex, and understanding what's going on can be very daunting for new students and parents. If you ever need some assistance with your ATAR, KIS Academics tutors have a thorough knowledge of the subjects and can assist in understanding curriculum requirements. Our tutors are able to provide materials and teaching on how to prepare for internal and external assessments. Learn about our QCE tutoring and book a free study skills consultation with a KIS Academics tutor.
As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me a wace french tutor who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor
“I got the top mark for my SAC which was really nice, and I think that’s all because of my tutor”

“It's been absolutely fantastic and it's just been a very positive environment for learning”

Hi! My name is Amy and I am currently studying at the University of Sydney. Because I found science (especially chemistry) to be very intriguing, I decided to study the Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiography.
Having completed the new QCE system, I gathered a ton of tips that I know will help you with your journey throughout school. I know for a fact that you can't always rely on pure memorisation to ace your exams. So here, I would love to deliver each lesson so that you can understand every syllabus dotpoint or learning goal in the best way possible. A few examples could be doing step by step breakdowns of complex problems, in depth explanations of science concepts or going through some chemistry problems together - you name it.
Of course, I don't always study 24/7. My day off could look something like hanging out with friends or getting myself lost in some thriller/suspense novels. I would love to help and guide you not only academically but also in all aspects of school life so that you can perform your best.
Hello everyone! My name is Joshua Badshah I am a fourth year Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) student at the University of Queensland. University has been amazing, allowing me to embark on academic, leadership, and social adventures. Academically, I have been involved in two research projects through my degree. The first one was at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, where I was working with colorectal cancer cell lines. I was using CRISPR/Cas9 to knockout a gene and proved that a new cancer drug was effective in these knockout models. Next, I embarked on a bioinformatics research project. Bioinformatics uses programming (PYTHON and R), to analyse large sets of genetic information. I used machine learning (artificial intelligence) to label different cell types in blood samples. Through these two experiences, as a tutor, I can give the bigger picture. Especially, when a student is keen to know what the real world implication of learning DNA synthesis is! Next, I am Academic Vice President of the UQ Biomed Society. I also started a UQ Karaoke club to improve the social life of students after the pandemic. Through these leadership experiences, I have learnt to work well with various types of people, always making sure that everyone is happy.
Finally, I would like to add that I am someone who aims for very high standards and will push my students to do the same. My teaching style involves giving the bigger picture first, going through the basic concepts that are needed, and then putting it all together. My aim is to improve the general knowledge of the student and improve their interest in the given subject.
FUN FACTS: I am a lead guitarist in a rock band. I played badminton for my state back in my home New Zealand. My dream is to pursue medicine, oncology (surgery and research).
Hello! My name is Zarmina Mian and I am studying Medicine at Bond University. I graduated with an ATAR of 99.3 and was the Dux of Biology and German in year 12. My year was the first year to complete the new ATAR system in Queensland so I have a good understanding of the assessments in each subject. I enjoy tutoring English, English and Literature Extension, Biology and helping with any sort of essay work. I am also happy to work with my students on time management and bettering their approach to study. I like getting to know my students and catering to their needs as much as I can. I have over a two year's worth of experience in tutoring and love seeing my students succeed! In my free time I love baking and cooking. I also love animals, and will definitely enjoy talking to my students about any pets they have. I will work with my students every step of the way in their academic endeavours and ensure I can help them as much as I can in pursuing their dreams.
