All I remember was shouting at the top of my lungs “MUM, DAD.” I scared the sh*t out of them I yelled so loud. They didn’t even know why I was so ecstatic. It took so long to sink in and to just say the words: “I did it. I don’t know how but I got a 99.95 ATAR”

Brisbane uses the QCE ATAR System in Year 11 and 12

From Years 5-10, students mainly focus on general English, Maths and Science.

In year 11 and 12, students complete subjects as part of their ATAR studies, which is the system used in Queensland to get admission into university.

QCE subjects and subject performance is used to calculate your ATAR.

The QCE System: What you need to know

For most Year 11s and 12s, their parents and tutors, the QCE is something to await with apprehension and dread. Not to mention the fact that the QLD system has recently undergone a bit of a “facelift” in 2020, so there are some important changes you need to know.

Let’s break down the Queensland Certificate of Education and what it entails, so you (whether you are a student, parent, or tutor) are ready for the rollercoaster ride that is Year 12.

What subjects do I need for my QCE/ATAR?

In the QCE system, subjects are split up into 2 categories, general and applied

  • Applied subjects can count towards QCE but only one applied subject can be used in calculation of ATAR
  • General subjects can count towards both QCE and ATAR calculation

As mentioned above, you need a minimum of 20 credits, meaning 5 general subjects, or 4 general subjects and 1 applied subject. Alternatively, some students opt to undertake a diploma or certificate during Year 11 and 12, such as the Diploma of Business, which can also contribute towards their QCE/ATAR certification.

All students must successfully complete an English subject to receive their QCE and ATAR.

For the remaining 5 or 6 subjects you select for your senior studies, there is a broad range of options available, including Maths, Science, Commerce, Arts, Humanities, Languages and more.

If you are aiming to get into a particular university course, such as Medicine, it’s crucial that you look into any subject prerequisites each university requires, as this can affect what courses you will be eligible for.

What are the assessments like?

Each subject has a unique assessment style and structure, but all subjects will have two components: internal and external assessment.

Internal assessments refer to any exams/assignments that are formulated and assessed by individual schools, which are then sent off to the QCAA (QLD’s education authority) for external confirmation. For most subjects, internal assessments comprise 75% of the total subject weighting (excluding Maths and Science subjects which are 50%).

External assessments are the big bad final exams that everyone stresses about at the end of the year. These exams are written and marked by the QCAA themselves, and usually amount to 25% of a subject’s total grade (excluding Maths and Science again, which are 50%). These invigilated exams are held in a 4-week exam period during the end of the school year. Each subject exam across the state is held at the same time so you are all in it together (couldn’t resist the high school musical reference).

The QCE ATAR system can be quite complex, and understanding what's going on can be very daunting for new students and parents. If you ever need some assistance with your ATAR, KIS Academics tutors have a thorough knowledge of the subjects and can assist in understanding curriculum requirements. Our tutors are able to provide materials and teaching on how to prepare for internal and external assessments. As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me someone who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor

98.55

ATAR

Hi! I'm Yaroslava but you can call me Yarra.

I graduated from Somerville House with an ATAR of 98.55 and am now studying Computer Science and Law (Honours) at the University of Queensland. I did Year 12 under the new QCE system during COVID, so I definitely learned a thing or two about studying smart, not hard.

The subjects I did were English, Maths Methods, Chemistry, Physics, Modern History, Chinese and Russian. I genuinely loved learning content for both STEM and humanities once I realized all the anxiety around long study hours was really unnecessary. I received 99/100 in English, 94/100 in Physics, the highest score in Queensland in Russian and academic commendation from the QCAA.

My teaching is enthusiastic, and my style is concept-centered. I make sure you understand the underlying ideas and relationships within the subject using clear notes and explanations before doing practice questions. While memorization is undeniably a part of some subjects, you'd be surprised how much can be logically explained away instead of cramming. My aim is to make sure you understand everything you need to know in the long term and tailor my teaching to you: the student.

I'm keen to help you achieve **your ** goals, whether it's learning content, assignment help, improving study techniques, or fostering a life-long love of learning!

99.85

ATAR

Hi! I’m Angela and I was one of the first students to go through QLD's new ATAR system. I graduated with 100/100 for English, followed by a 99 in Chemistry and a 97 in Maths Methods. I was recognised as Brisbane State High School's Best All Rounder, one of Queensland's Distinguished Academic Achievers and a recipient of the TJ Ryan Memorial Scholarship.

If there’s one thing I wholeheartedly understand (apart from the QLD syllabus - thnx Yr 12), it’s the drudgery of slaving away at schoolwork all while balancing the struggles of life itself. But if I somehow managed it, then you can too! I look forward to sharing all the tips and tricks I learnt when it comes to exams, assignments and general studying, as well as the feedback and advice my amazing teachers gave during my time at high school.

In my experience as a tutor, I’ve learned how to deliver tutoring that is tailored to you, being flexible and accommodating to help you reach your best. I hope I can make learning fun, engaging and effective, so that you can look back on your high school experience as fondly as I do.

Currently, I am studying a Bachelor of Medical Science/Doctor of Medicine at UNSW, with occasional trips back to visit my Brisbane hometown. To balance the workload, I can always be found playing badminton with friends or enjoying a good book with a warm cup of tea ☕️

99.85

ATAR

I'm a current medical student with GPA 7, who graduated from Brisbane State High School with an ATAR 99.85. I've had over a thousand hours of experience in tutoring Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Maths Specialist, Maths Methods, English and German over the past five years. I was in the top 5 at BSHS, the biggest secondary school in Queensland, for every one of these except English (though I ranked in the top 10 regardless). Since finishing school, I have obtained a Bachelor of Medical Science with Distinction (cumulative GPA 7). I'm now also employed as a tutor in Medical Anatomy as well as Neuroscience.

I believe my results with students speak for themselves, with my past students including a Dux of Brisbane State High School and Young Entrepreneur of the Year. In addition, I’ve specifically coached numerous students into a career in medicine. My approach to content sets my apart from other tutors, in the that I focus on making sure my students truly understand content at the deepest possible level rather than advocating simple memorisation. I also weave through my lessons principles of studying, taking exams and doing assignments to maximise effectiveness.
