WACE stands for the Western Australian Certificate of Education. This is a certificate that students receive on successful completion of the requirements of the WACE at the conclusion of their senior secondary education. This is what is recognised by all universities in Australia and other tertiary institutions.
Students are to choose their subjects for Year 10, 11 and 12 if they choose the ATAR pathway. It is recommended that they choose their subjects in year 10 so they can best prepare for WACE related topics in Year 11.
Requirements for subject choices for WACE:
Although requirements are for year 12 courses, schools require you to choose 2 list A subjects and 2 list B so that you don't change the subject in-between year 11 and year 12. In fact, changing subjects between Year 11 and 12 is highly unadvisable!
Apart from this, there are certain combinations of subjects you are not allowed to do. Such as:
There are also certain subjects that must be taken together. For example, if you take Maths Specialist, it is imperative that you also take Maths Methods.
Some schools do not offer some subjects, so it is important to look at the list that the school gives to see if they can do the subject they wish.
The WACE ATAR system can be quite complex, and understanding what's going on can be very daunting for new students and parents. If you ever need some assistance with your ATAR or are looking for a wace maths tutors near you, KIS Academics tutors have a thorough knowledge of the subjects and can assist in understanding curriculum requirements. Our tutors are able to provide materials and teaching on how to prepare for internal and external assessments through our comprehensive tutoring sessions, whether that be in person or through online tutoring. As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me a wace french tutor who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor
“I got the top mark for my SAC which was really nice, and I think that’s all because of my tutor”
Medha / Year 12 Student
“It's been absolutely fantastic and it's just been a very positive environment for learning”

Hi! My name is Nandana. As a high school graduate, I know exactly how you must be feeling towards your own WACE journey. It can be quite daunting, especially considering the immense pressure you're put under. Thus, my goal is to use my experience in upper school to provide you with authentic tips to study as efficiently as possible while leaving time to do the things you enjoy (which is extremely important of course!).
For instance, when I was in high school, I juggled studying and my extra-curricular commitments like dancing, leadership activities at school as well as spending time with family and friends. This required me to study as efficiently as possible, and in an organised fashion so that I had enough time to rest and do the things I enjoyed. As a result I was able to score the ATAR I aimed for and also received several accolades like the General Exhibition Award (Top 50 in WA) and Subject Excellence for English (top 0.5% in WA). I am confident I can share these tips and skills with you, as well as specific, subject-related tips so that you can maximise your academic potential.
Moreover, my experience in tutoring a range of students of all age groups (Year 7-12) has given me a wealth of knowledge about catering to the individual needs of students and their learning styles.
A little bit about me: I am currently studying BPhil (Honours) in Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice with a direct pathway into Doctor of Medicine at UWA. In my spare time, you can find me dancing, playing my ukulele or spending time with my friends and family.
Hi, nice to meet you! My name is Henry.
Since I have finished high school, I’ve been tutoring upper primary school and high school aged students online across Australia as well as Japan in quite a variety of subjects, including Essay Writing, SAT preparation, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. In my final year of school, I studied Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics Methods and Specialist, and Literature, with my strongest subjects being Mathematics Methods and Physics ATAR.
From being told that “I wasn’t cut out” Specialist Mathematics at the beginning of Year ten to finishing Dux of my School at the end of Year Twelve, I can show you how to transform your academic fortunes like how I managed to, using the skills, learning strategies, and study techniques that I adopted to achieve success in my studies.
My main focus in our lessons is to equip you with the skills to take charge of your own learning by becoming more organized, and to motivate you to become a confident, independent learner.
So what am I doing now?
Well, I am currently studying Aerospace Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne. Outside of my studies, I love getting outdoors– especially heading down to the beach during the summer (WA beaches >> Melbourne beaches by the way), and playing sports. I am also part of the Monash Uncrewed Aerial Systems, a student team which develops and constructs autonomous aircraft and drones that compete Internationally.
