Our mission is to provide students with the resources and support they need to excel in their HSC studies and achieve their academic goals 💪. Whether you're looking for HSC maths tutors, HSC English tutors, or a tutor for any other subject, we have you covered.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the HSC curriculum? Do you need help preparing for internal and external assessments 📝? Our experienced and dedicated HSC tutors can provide the guidance and support you need to succeed 💪.
Exactly how the mythical HSC works is a constant source of confusion for parents and students - sometimes even for those currently undertaking HSC subjects. Hopefully all of the following information - explained for you by a HSC survivor! - will clarify the key points of confusion.
The HSC works on a “units” system. Most classes are two units (English, Math, Chemistry etc), but extension subjects are only one unit (English Extension, Math Extension etc).
In year 11 you are required to take a minimum of 12 units (for most people this is 6 subjects). In year 12 you are only required to take 10 units. Regardless of how many units you take, only the 10 best units will count towards your ATAR. Each unit is worth 50 marks and therefore for the standard 2 unit course you will receive a mark out of 100.
For every course, regardless of the units, your final grade is made up of:
Except it’s slightly more complicated than that. Your internal marks are never given to NESA (The New South Wales Education Standards Authority). What gets entered is your rank within your cohort at your school.

As a year 11 student doing ATAR, I was looking for a tutor that could help me with French. KIS Academics was incredibly helpful and fast at finding me a wace french tutor who could assist me with my studies. My tutor Eliza Carey over the past few months has helped me so much not only in French but in biology and maths as well. I’m incredibly grateful for the effort and commitment she has put into helping me be more comfortable and less stressed about the subjects I was having difficulty with. It’s been nothing but an honour to be tutored by Eliza and I strongly recommend her as a tutor
“I got the top mark for my SAC which was really nice, and I think that’s all because of my tutor”
Medha / Year 12 Student
“It's been absolutely fantastic and it's just been a very positive environment for learning”
Amanda / Parent of a Year 7 Student
Hello! I’m Navleen, I’m currently studying Medicine at the University of Newcastle and am extremely excited for your consideration to be your tutor. I’m your avidly involved med student – when I’m not binging Netflix you’ll see me playing soccer, volunteering at the hospital, or baking my favourite chocolate-filled desserts (they are a must-try!!). You may recognise me from some MedEntry ads, having got a UCAT of 99, I help inspire and lead many students to get into their dream course of medicine. And now, I’d love the opportunity to be your tutor and help get you the marks to your dream course too.
My teaching is completely individualised to you - I make sure to understand where you are at, your learning pace, strengths, and weaknesses – and tailor my lesson to your specific needs. As your tutor, I find and address the gaps in your knowledge in the foundation of each topic, which allows complex concepts built upon it to be understood a thousand times easier. I also make sure to cover loads of exam style questions and quizzes, which students have found to be the most help in each lesson.
I strongly believe that each student’s best potential can be reached by working smart, not hard. Through my own experience, I have gained lots of tips for navigating the life of a high school student, and I would love to share them with you and see you succeed too!
Keen to talk to you soon :)
Hi, my name is Emma Ashley and I graduated in 2020 with a 99.45 ATAR. Since then, I have gone on to study Law with Honours and PPE, Politics Philosophy and Economics, at the Australian National University. I have been involved with KIS Academics in many capacities over the last 2.5 years, namely as the Legal and Finances consultant, NSW state consultant, Events manager, Sales Manager and developing the English Advanced Online Course.
I began tutoring as soon as I finished my HSC in November 2020, and soon enough I was conducting approximately 20 hours of lessons every week. This means that across the past 3 years I have tutored 70+ students … and counting! Why you may ask? Because I genuinely love sharing knowledge with others. There is nothing more valuable to me than seeing a student become excited to learn, the ‘ah ha’ moment where they finally understand or when they tell me about an amazing grade they just received.
My role as a tutor is to facilitate learning in a safe, comfortable environment, whilst focusing on areas of weakness and improving exam technique, things often over looked in the classroom. I intend for students to take agency over their learning and therefore ensure that they are able to guide lessons to suit their needs at the time, as usually the student knows what they need to focus on better than anyone else. My assistance and guidance extends beyond the classroom as I am always happy to communicate with my students if they have urgent questions or would like feedback before our next lesson.
Thank you for taking the time to read a little bit about me and I am excited to hear from you about your study needs.
Well, there are many factors that can help you answer this question. The main one is to really know yourself and which areas you might be struggling with. And if you recently got an unexpected mark for an exam, but you knew it was because you didn’t study properly as opposed to not understanding the content, then perhaps you don’t need a tutor for that HSC subject. However, if you are feeling as though you do not understand the content in a particular HSC course, even when your teacher and perhaps peers have explained it to you, it might be a good idea to consider getting a HSC tutor.
A good HSC tutor will have a variety of qualities, but here’s the top 3 things that makes a fantastic HSC tutor! Compassionate: A good HSC tutor will understand the struggle that comes along with sitting the HSC, and can empathise with the stress that you may be experiencing at a given time. Understanding and patience: A good HSC tutor will understand that some topics are just difficult to grasp on the first go, and will be more than happy to work with you to ensure that you understand each and every topic in full capacity. Friendly: A good HSC tutor will not really have the distant relationship you might have with some of your teachers – they will be more like a friend who can offer support whether this be emotional or academic, and help you along with many aspects of school other than academics such as organisation and extracurriculars.
When deciding what subjects you want to get a tutor for, it is always a good idea to sit down, and take a look at the subjects you are struggling in the most, or the ones that you feel are your weakest. Based on this, you can try to assess whether you feel as though you will be able to pull through during the year and fill in any gaps in your knowledge on your own, or whether you would prefer to have a mentor to help guide you through the process. If you resonate with the second option, then maybe it’s time to start searching for a tutor for that subject! You should also consider location preference, for example, if you want Year 12 online tutoring on if in person tutoring suits you better!
