Grade 10 maths isn't necessarily the most challenging maths.

At least, not when you compare it to the kind of stuff you learn in Year 12.

Well, Grade 10 maths isn't too hard. But it IS important.

You see, the thing about mathematics is that no topic, no concept and no year level's maths is completely unique. Every single concept builds upon things you've learnt in the past, no matter what year level you're in and what topic you're studying. Maths is cumulative - it's always adding new knowledge to the things you learned beforehand. Every single concept is consequential.

In some ways, that's a really good thing. It means that every time you learn a new concept, it'll be based on ideas that have been discussed in the past, and new concepts you learn will always be useful later on.

But it can also be really, really devastating.

Missing one topic or failing to understand a single part of the maths curriculum can mean that you struggle with maths not only now, but in years to come. Gaps in your knowledge in Year 10 can continue to cause problems all the way up until your Year 12 exams.

Taking trigonometry for instance, many students find it boring and don't pay attention when being taught the theories behind trigonometric ratios. At the end of the day - they are just triangles. How complicated can they get? Well, as a private tutor myself, I have personally witnessed the absolutely crippling consequences of not learning your trigonometric exact values by heart. Learning about SOHCAHTOA is laborious and soul-destroying, but without it, you won't be able to understand circular functions come Year 12!

Which is why Year 10 maths is so important.

It might not seem like it right now but building strong foundations and numeracy skills in Grade 10 will really set you up for success in later years.

Not taking the subject seriously though will set you up for failure.
