If you’re studying in a Canberra college, you’ve probably realized the ACT BSSS system is a different beast entirely. There are no massive, three-hour final exams for every subject. Instead, you are marked on everything you do—essays, lab reports, and mid-term tests—across Years 11 and 12. This is called "Continuous School-Based Assessment," and it means every single piece of work counts toward your final result.
The first thing you need to suss out is your course type. "T" Courses (Tertiary) are designed for university entrance, while "A" Courses (Accredited) are more about general education or vocational pathways. If you’re gunning for an ATAR, your "Tertiary Package" must include at least 20 standard units, and a majority of those must be T-units.
A private ACT tutor is a game-changer here because they help you manage the constant pressure. Unlike the HSC or VCE where you can "cram" at the end, the ACT requires you to be "on" 100% of the time. A mentor can help you stay organized so you aren't drowning in assignments when three different "T" courses have deadlines in the same week.
Since the ACT doesn't have central subject exams, how does the system compare a 90 in English at Narrabundah College to a 90 at Gungahlin College? The answer is the ACT Scaling Test (AST). Taken in Year 12, this isn't a test of what you know, but how you think. It tests critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and writing through multiple-choice questions and a short response task.
The AST is the "magic wand" of the BSSS system. It scales your school marks to ensure fairness across the Territory. If your school cohort performs brilliantly on the AST, it can actually lift the scaling of your internal scores. This creates a unique "team" environment where everyone in your scaling group wants each other to do well.
While you can’t "study" content for the AST, you can definitely practice the logical reasoning skills it requires. Working with a BSSS tutor who has recently sat the test can give you the strategies needed to tackle the abstract questions and the time-management skills to nail the writing task. It’s about learning to think like a marker, not just memorizing facts.
Your ACT ATAR is calculated using your "best 3.6" scaled scores (your three best majors plus 0.6 of your next best major or minor). Because of this formula, even a small improvement in one subject can have a huge impact on your final aggregate. KIS Academics connects you with tutors in Canberra who understand the specific nuances of "unit scores" and "historical scaling" in the ACT.
Private tutoring in the ACT is all about criterion-referenced marking. Your tutor can look at your draft assessments and tell you exactly where you’re missing out on those "A-grade" descriptors. Whether it’s Specialist Methods or Psychology, having a one-on-one session allows you to deep-dive into the concepts that your teacher might have skimmed over in class.
Using the KIS platform is easy—you can suss out tutor profiles, check their own BSSS results, and see which Canberra colleges they attended. Because it’s online, you can have a session from your desk without having to drive across the Tuggeranong Parkway. It’s the smartest way to build your confidence and ensure that your continuous assessment scores are as high as possible before results are finalized in December.
To wrap up the Australian sweep, we focus on the ACT Senior Secondary System. The ACT is famously the only jurisdiction in Australia without final "subject exams." Instead, it relies on a sophisticated 2026 framework of continuous assessment and one high-stakes scaling test.If you’re studying at a Canberra college like Narrabundah, Gungahlin, or Lake Tuggeranong, you’re in a unique position. There are no massive, three-hour final exams for every subject. Instead, the ACT BSSS (Board of Senior Secondary Studies) uses Continuous School-Based Assessment. This means every essay, lab report, and mid-term test across Years 11 and 12 contributes to your final rank.
By 2026, the distinction between "T" Courses (Tertiary) and "A" Courses (Accredited) remains the most critical choice. To be eligible for an ATAR, you must complete a "Tertiary Package," which typically includes at least 20 standard units. Because the pressure is spread across two years rather than one month of exams, burnout is the biggest risk for ACT students.
A private BSSS tutor acts as an organizational coach. They don't just teach the content; they help you manage the relentless cycle of deadlines. Since your unit scores are calculated every semester, a tutor ensures you don't have a "bad term" that drags down your final University Aggregate.
Since every college marks differently, the ACT uses the AST (ACT Scaling Test) to level the playing field. Held in early September, it consists of three papers: Multiple Choice, Short Response, and a Writing Task. It doesn't test your memory; it tests critical thinking and reasoning.
The AST is essentially a "team sport." Your individual score matters, but your entire scaling group's performance on the AST helps determine the final value of the marks your school gave you. If your cohort performs well on the AST, it can "lift" the scores of the whole group.
While you can't "study" for the AST in the traditional sense, you can absolutely train for it. A KIS tutor who has recently aced the AST can show you the specific logic behind the multiple-choice units and how to structure a 600-word Writing Task that hits the "high-level analysis" markers are looking for.
