Terri
Hello! I'm Terri - an enthusiastic and energetic lecturer, teacher, tutor and facilitator. With nine years of university lecturing experience as well as eight years of secondary school teaching experience, I am skilled and experienced in walking a learning journey with a student. Throughout my time teaching and lecturing, I have also worked as an academic tutor. My tutoring experience is mainly in Academic Support and English (language, literature and writing). I am experienced tutoring across a range of ages, both online and in-person, and individually as well as in small groups. As an author for a series of school textbooks, I am skilled at resource development, assessment setting and evaluation and can offer accurate, focused and specific feedback on draft work. I am a warm and approachable educator with a focused but fun approach to learning. I work hard to build good rapport with each student I teach and value fostering positive learning spaces. The learning experiences I have crafted are consistently positively evaluated by students, reflecting the effectiveness of my instructional methods, pedagogic selections and ability to interact meaningfully with students.
As a result of my work in education across different contexts, I have developed a range of skills – most notably regarding working flexibly with students in different learning environments and the ability to adapt my approach to teaching for specific purposes and outcomes. I have spent eight years working in academic support and this time equipped me with a wide range of inclusive practices to learning and developed my creativity in material and assessment design. During this time, I was part of the team that was awarded the Collaborative Education Practice Award for our ground-breaking work in developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
I hold epistemic knowledge to be of the utmost importance and always ensure that the conceptual basis of any work being taught is made explicit to the student. I have also worked in Children's Theatre and have presented curriculum-based workshops to children of all ages. I love working with students of any age and am easily able to adapt my teaching style to suit the age of the student with whom I am working.
Outside of my teaching work, I love writing (and have completed a children's writing course as well as a copy-writing course), languages (I have a level C1.1 in Italian), photography (I have completed an 8 week introductory photography course), cooking (I've attended cooking classes in Italy, Turkey and South Africa) and travelling. I'm addicted to board games and also love watching movies and listening to music.
I studied English, Psychology, Drama and Education at University. In order to pursue my current doctoral studies in Education (with a focus on curriculum and pedagogy), I have taken a break from full-time teaching work and am now working in a freelance capacity. I'd love to meet you and see how we can work together to craft a meaningful learning journey.
