MAH, ALVIN YONG XUAN
Hello! My name is Alvin and I'm currently studying Medicine at Monash University. I'm really looking forward to tutoring what I love: science!!
As a tutor, I think adaptability and patience is really important in making learning as effective as possible. What school often misses is that we all learn in different ways and have different goals, so I aim to tailor each lesson to your specific learning needs. Sometimes, teachers don't break down big and complex ideas into smaller bits, so I strive to make learning a little less daunting and a little more palatable. With 1.5 years of experience mentoring younger students throughout VCE, I really enjoyed seeing them grow--academically and holistically--as they became more confident in explaining concepts and engaged more in classroom discussions. VCE has seen big shift towards more application and contextualisation, so I aim to swap out rote memorisation for more effective ways of learning and understanding.
As an international student, I understand how difficult it can be to sustain motivation whilst adapting to a new environment. I know it sounds really cliche, but sometimes finding the time to enjoy the things you love is pretty handy to keep it all moving forward. Looking back at high school, I'm glad I took part in activities outside the textbooks such as band and Art Society. This mindset has helped me win two Victorian Global Learning Awards, Community Engagement in Year 11 and Academic Excellence in Year 12.
Nowadays, I fill my free time baking with friends, rock climbing, and volunteering, but also learning more about medicine as I have made it my life goal.
Thank you for reading my bio, I can't wait to (potentially) see you soon :)
