VCE Further Mathematics 3/4

I’m sure you’ve heard people say this before:

“Further maths is easy, you don’t need a tutor”

“There’s no point buying notes for further, you’ll be fine”

“You don’t even have to study that hard, it’s such an easy subject”

Those people? They’re right…

(And it’s a big IF)

They’re right IF you’re content with getting average marks in further.

Why? Well, it’s simple. Let’s say that out of all 25 students in your further class right now, only your best friend gets some extra resources.  

Everybody else does the exact same amount of work, but your friend does a little bit of extra homework.

Everybody memorises exactly what the teacher says, but your friend UNDERSTANDS what they are being taught.

Everybody does exactly what every other student in the state does, but your friend watches those extra videos, puts in the extra 30 minutes of work per day, and goes the extra mile.

Everybody does what the average further student does and gets an average mark.

You do the same thing as every other further student, and you get an average mark.

But your best friend? They do what only the top 1% of further students do, so they get an above average mark.

While you’re stuck with a 25 at the end of the year, they’re out enjoying that glorious 50.

The people who get average marks are the ones who love to say that “VCE isn’t a competition” when it literally couldn’t be any MORE of a competition. Your ATAR stands for Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking - It’s a RANKING. You’re competing with other students to get the highest ranking you possible can, in order to get into competitive university courses.

And in a subject as competitive as further, every single mark counts.

So students who do the same thing as everyone else…

Students who do the same thing as the “average” year 12 student…

They get average results.

Out of the 29,550 students who sit the further exam, are you going to do the same thing that everyone else does? The same thing that the average student does?

Or are you going to differentiate yourself from the pack and do what it takes to get into the top 1% of the state.

You don’t have to be naturally smart or gifted student. All you need to do is do things differently to the average person.
