What were WA's top performing schools in 2023?

In 2022, the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre revealed that 9722 Western Australian students achieved an ATAR, a slightly larger number of students than last year. Let us break down the results for you in this article.

Overview of WACE 2023 Results

The highest median ATARs achieved by students completing:

• Mathematics specialist was 96.30
• Mathematics Methods was 92.50
• Chemistry was 90.80
• Literature was 90.40
• Physics was 90.05

This year also saw some outstanding student performances, with Perth Modern College achieving its best result in decades despite enduring COVID lockdowns for a large portion of their early schooling.

From almost 10,000 Western Australian students who sat for an ATAR in 2022, 17 students achieved a perfect score of 99.95. Out of these 17 students were 12 girls and five boys. Below is a tally of which schools these students came from:

Top Performing Schools WACE ATAR results

1. Perth Modern School

• 4 students achieved the top ATAR of 99.95.
• 62 students achieved an ATAR of 99 and above, placing them in the top 1 percent of the state.
• The approximated median ATAR was 97.

2. Christ Church Grammar School

• The top ATAR achieved was 99.90.
• 18 students (10% of ATAR candidates) obtained an ATAR of 99 and above, placing them in the top 1 percent of the state.
• 53 students (30% of ATAR candidates) obtained an ATAR of 95 and above, placing them in the top 5 percent of the state.
• 83 students (46% of ATAR candidates) obtained an ATAR of 90 and above, placing them in the top 10 percent of the state.

3. Rossmoyne Senior High School

• The top ATAR achieved was 99.95.
• 21 Rossmoyne Year 12 students achieved an ATAR of 99+, placing them in the top 1 percent of the state.
• Approximately 40% of Rossmoyne students received an ATAR above 90, placing them in the top 10 percent of the state.

4. Carmel School

• The top ATAR achieved was 99.7.
• 14% of Carmel students achieved an ATAR of 98 and above, placing them in the top 2 percent of the state.
• 54% of Carmel students achieved an ATAR of 90 and above, placing them in the top 10 percent of the state.

The following schools are listed in no particular order:

Hale School

• 14 students (8% of the cohort) achieved an ATAR of 99 and above, placing them in the top 1 percent of the state.
• 53 students (29% of the cohort) achieved an ATAR of 95 and above, placing them in the top 5 percent of the state.
• 85 students (47% of the cohort) achieved an ATAR of 90 and above, placing them in the top 10 percent of the state.

St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School

• Three students achieved the top ATAR of 99.95.
• 12% of students achieved an ATAR of 99 and above, placing them in the top 1 percent of the state.
• 37% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 and above, placing them in the top 5 percent of the state.
• 57% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 and above, placing them in the top 10 percent of the state.
• The median ATAR was 92.05.

Methodist Ladies’ College

• Two students achieved the top ATAR of 99.95.
• 34 students (35% of the cohort) achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5 percent of the state.
• 49 students (50% of the cohort) achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 5 percent of the state.
• 82 students (84% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 75 or above, placing them in the top 15 percent of the state.

Wesley College

• 6 students (6.7% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 99 and above, placing them in the top 1 percent of the state.
• 18 students (20.2% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 95 and above, placing them in the top 5 percent of the state.
• 35 students (39.3% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 90 and above, placing them in the top 10 percent of the state.
• The median ATAR was 87.15.

John XXIII college

• 6 students achieved an ATAR of 99 and above.
• 30% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 and above
• 55% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 and above
• The median ATAR was 91.0.
