HSC Economics FAQs
Is HSC Economics hard?
HSC Economics is challenging because it requires students to combine theory, quantitative skills, contemporary evidence and extended writing rather than relying purely on memorisation.
In the 2025 HSC, Economics had a median HSC mark of 80, and approximately 14% of students achieved Band 6.
A Band 6 is therefore achievable, but it requires strong application and evaluation rather than just knowing definitions.
Does HSC Economics scale well?
Economics generally scales strongly compared with many large HSC courses.
In UAC's 2025 data, Economics had an average scaled mark of 31.4 out of 50 per unit, compared with an average reported HSC mark of 39.0/50.
However, UAC specifically warns that these tables should not be treated as simple HSC-mark-to-scaled-mark conversions. Your scaled result depends on your raw marks, position within the candidature and the performance of the course cohort.
So choose Economics because you can perform well in it, not purely because of scaling.
How many students get a Band 6 in Economics?
In 2025, approximately 14% of HSC Economics candidates achieved Band 6. The median mark was 80, placing the median candidate in Band 5.
The percentage changes from year to year.
Is Economics harder than Business Studies?
The subjects reward different skills.
Economics places greater emphasis on:
- economic relationships
- quantitative reasoning
- diagrams
- contemporary economic data
- policy evaluation.
Business Studies is generally more focused on business functions, terminology, case-study application and business responses.
Neither is automatically easier. The better choice depends on whether your strengths align more closely with economic analysis or business application.
Do you need to be good at maths for HSC Economics?
There is no prerequisite or corequisite for HSC Economics under the current syllabus.
You do, however, need to be comfortable with:
- percentages
- ratios
- basic algebra
- interpreting graphs
- applying economic formulas.
The mathematics is generally manageable, but avoiding quantitative practice can cost easy marks.
Do I need to memorise statistics for Economics?
Yes β using accurate, up-to-date statistics is one of the fastest ways to improve your marks. You donβt need hundreds of stats; around 15β20 key figures on growth, inflation, unemployment, the budget and the cash rate is enough for strong essays and short answers.
How many statistics should I memorise for HSC Economics?
A concise bank of high-value current statistics covering the major economic indicators is more useful than dozens of numbers you cannot apply.
For each statistic, know what changed + why + economic consequence + policy relevance.
How many essays should I practise for HSC Economics?
Aim to practise at least 10β15 essays before Trials and 15β20 before the HSC. Regular essay practice helps you perfect structure, analyse policies, and learn how to evaluate effectiveness using diagrams and data.
