If you're preparing for VCE General Mathematics, past exams are one of the best resources you can use.

General Maths is a subject where small mistakes matter. You might understand the content perfectly but still lose marks because you misread a question, entered something incorrectly into your CAS or overlooked one step in a multi-part problem.

Past exams help you get used to the way VCAA actually tests the course — and worked solutions help you understand exactly where you went wrong.

To make things easier, we've compiled the key VCE General Mathematics past exams, worked solutions and KIS resources below so you can spend less time searching and more time preparing.

What is the VCE General Mathematics Exam Format?

VCE General Mathematics has two end-of-year exams.

Both exams cover the four major areas of Units 3 and 4:

Data analysis
Recursion and financial modelling
Matrices
Networks and decision mathematics.

Each examination contributes 30% of your final study score, while your Units 3 and 4 School-assessed Coursework contributes the remaining 40%.

General Mathematics Exam 1

Exam 1 is entirely multiple choice.

You get:

15 minutes reading time
1 hour and 30 minutes writing time
40 multiple-choice questions
40 marks total
access to an approved CAS
access to a scientific calculator
one approved bound reference
a supplied formula sheet.

The 40 questions are divided as follows:

Total	40	40

This means 40% of Exam 1 is data analysis, so it is definitely not a topic you want to neglect.

General Mathematics Exam 2

Exam 2 focuses more heavily on applying your knowledge through short-answer, extended-answer and multi-stage questions.

You get:

15 minutes reading time
1 hour and 30 minutes writing time
60 marks total
access to an approved CAS
access to a scientific calculator
one approved bound reference
a supplied formula sheet.

Marks are distributed as follows:

Total	60

Both exams test the entire Units 3 and 4 course, so you can't completely sacrifice one topic and hope it doesn't appear.

The current VCE General Mathematics study design began in 2023, so exams from 2023 onwards should be your highest priority.

VCAA currently provides official General Mathematics examinations, assessment guides and external assessment reports for the current study design.

Is VCE General Maths hard?

General Mathematics is more accessible than Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics, but that doesn't mean it is an easy subject.

The biggest challenge is often accuracy. Because many students understand the core content well, small mistakes can make a significant difference to your final result.

Is General Maths the same as Further Maths?

Not exactly.

General Mathematics replaced Further Mathematics under the current VCE Mathematics study design from 2023.

There is significant overlap, but the course structure changed. Older Further Mathematics papers are therefore useful for additional practice, but they do not perfectly reflect the current General Mathematics exam.

How many VCE General Maths exams are there?

There are two end-of-year exams.

Exam 1 is worth 40 marks and consists entirely of multiple-choice questions.

Exam 2 is worth 60 marks and consists of short-answer and extended-answer questions.

Can you bring notes into VCE General Maths exams?

Yes. Students may bring one approved bound reference into both General Mathematics Exam 1 and Exam 2.

Which topic is worth the most in General Maths?

Data analysis has the largest weighting.

It accounts for 16 of the 40 marks in Exam 1 and 24 of the 60 marks in Exam 2 — 40% of each paper.

Does VCE General Maths scale down?

General Mathematics has historically tended to scale down at many raw study scores, but scaling changes every year depending on the performance of the cohort.

Don't choose or avoid General Maths solely because of scaling. Your actual performance in the subject matters much more.

Is a 40 study score in General Maths hard?

Yes. A study score of 40 or above represents very strong performance relative to other students studying the subject.

Because General Maths questions can often be accessible to a large proportion of the cohort, avoiding careless mistakes becomes particularly important when aiming for a high study score.
