Why is Goal Setting so Important?

1. Gives you something to work towards

Setting a goal for yourself gives you something to work towards, and that is what will keep you motivated to achieve it by the end of the school year. You will be able to build a better, and more focused study plan to achieve that goal.

Having goals also serve as a good motivation for when you just do not feel like picking up that book.

2. Builds a Strong Work Ethic

Achieving your target grades will not be easy; there will be trials and tribulations. But if you are determined to achieve that goal, you will find ways to do it! This journey to achieving your aim helps build a strong work ethic that will come in handy in life.

How to Set Smarter Goals?

Set SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. These are smaller, achievable goals you can check off on the daily, while you might have a loftier goal you want to achieve in the long run.

Here is how you can set your SMART goals:

  1. Split your goals into measurable, clearly defined mini-tasks written down in a planner or on a sticky note. You should be able to complete each mini-task within a single sitting (e.g. 25-60mins).
  2. After each task, check it off and reward yourself with something small!

For example: Jeremy wants to study for his Maths test. Instead of writing down “study for Maths test”, he breaks down his tasks into:

  • Download and print all revision worksheets
  • Do Q1-15 of Worksheet 1
  • Take a 5-minute break (small reward)
  • Do Q15-35 of Worksheet 1
  • Take a 5 minute break (small reward)
  • etc.
