HSC Physics FAQs
Is HSC Physics hard?
HSC Physics is generally considered challenging because you need to combine mathematical problem-solving, conceptual understanding and written scientific explanations. The course also covers quite different areas, from advanced mechanics and electromagnetism to light and modern physics. The good news is that Physics becomes much easier once you understand the relationships behind the formulas instead of trying to memorise solutions.
Does HSC Physics scale well?
Yes. Physics generally scales strongly compared with many HSC subjects. UAC specifically identifies Physics as a course commonly taken by students who perform strongly across their other HSC subjects, which contributes to a relatively high scaled distribution.
However, taking Physics does not automatically boost your ATAR. You still need to achieve a strong mark for its scaling to benefit you.
How many students get a Band 6 in HSC Physics?
In the 2025 HSC, approximately 13% of Physics students achieved Band 6. This means Band 6 is achievable, but you need to perform at a consistently high level across calculations, conceptual questions and Working Scientifically skills.
Do you need Maths for HSC Physics?
No. There is no formal prerequisite or corequisite for HSC Physics.
However, being comfortable with algebra, trigonometry, graphs and rearranging equations makes the course considerably easier. Mathematics Advanced is therefore a useful combination with Physics even though it isn't compulsory.
Is HSC Physics harder than Chemistry?
It depends on your strengths.
Physics generally involves more mathematical modelling, formulas and abstract concepts, while Chemistry involves more chemical theory, reactions, calculations and detailed content knowledge.
If you enjoy maths and understanding how systems work, Physics may feel easier. If you prefer chemical processes and experimental science, Chemistry may suit you better.
Is HSC Physics worth doing?
Physics can be a strong choice if you enjoy maths, problem-solving and understanding how physical systems behave.
It also scales relatively strongly, but scaling alone shouldn't determine your subject choice. UAC stresses that students still need strong performance within a course to receive strong scaled marks.
