What were QLD's Top Performing Schools in 2023?

On December 14th 2023, more than 27,000 students in Queensland anxiously waited and received an Australia Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) result.
In 2023, 94% of all Queensland graduates achieved either a QCE (Queensland Certification of Education) or a QCIA (Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement).

Summary of QCE Results
Being in the fourth year of the new QCE school system, it was found that:
- 1,429 students in total (from across 222 schools) will receive a Certificate of Academic Commendation scoring the highest grade of an ‘A’ in at least six of the general subjects offered.
- 94% of year 12 graduates received a Queensland Certificate of Education in 2023.
- 1,316 students studied a university subject while still in High School
- 36,897 students achieved a VET certificate I, II, III, IV or diploma qualification
- 510 students from 150 schools achieved the highest mark of 100 out of 100 in at least one general or extension subject.
According to the Brisbane Times article the Queensland government does not want to give a picture of individual school and average Year 12 results. However, there are some highlights based on what we could find!
- Results show that 2023 is the highest post school engagement since 2008, with 91.3% of year 12 graduates in 2023 going onto higher education, employment, or training.
- This year we saw increased attendance and work ethic across Queensland state. Schools saw an increase in attendance rates from 85.6% to 87.1%.
- The amount of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander year 12 completion increased in outcomes from 76.7% in 2022 to 79.7% in 2023.
- 92% of students achieved a Queensland Certificate of Education.
- 2% of students received Queensland Certificate of Individual achievement.
What were the Top QCE results?
In 2023, 34 students from Queensland received the highest possible ATAR of 99.95. This was a little higher than the 33 students in 2022. These students were found to have studied a combination of Physics, Literature, Specialist Mathematics and Biology.
This year the top 10 outperforming ranked schools were Anglican at 104, then private schools dominate this list at 93 followed by public and catholic. With, the majority of these schools being Co-Ed.
What were the Top Performing Schools?
First in State: Brisbane Girls Grammar School
- The median ATAR was 96.3.
- 62.17% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5% of the state.
- 95.22% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.
Second in State: St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School
- The median ATAR was 94.5.
- 46% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5% of the state.
- 84% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.
- One student achieved the Top ATAR of 99.95.
- 46% received straight A’s in all 5 of their subjects.
Third in State: Brisbane Grammar School
- The median ATAR was 94.2.
- 2 students received the top ATAR of 99.95.
- 3 students received an ATAR of 99.90.
- 46% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5% of the state.
- 65% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.
Fourth in State: Queensland Academy for Health Sciences

Fifth in State: All Hallows School
- The median ATAR was 93.35.
- One student achieved the Top ATAR of 99.95.
- 41% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5% of the state.
- 65% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.
Sixth in State: St Joseph's College
- The median ATAR was 93.55.
- 42% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5% of the state.
- 64% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.
Seventh in State: Sunshine Coast Grammar School
- 2 students achieved the Top ATAR of 99.95.
- 35% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5% of the state.
- 54.6% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.
Eighth in State: St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School
- The median ATAR was 91.8.
- 1 student achieved the Top ATAR of 99.95.
- 36.8% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or above, placing them in the top 5% of the state.
- 61.5% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.
Ninth in State: St Andrews Anglican Collage
- 2 students achieved the Top ATAR of 99.95.
Tenth in State: Matthew Flinders Anglican College
- The median ATAR was 90.63.
- One student achieved the Top ATAR of 99.95.
- 16 students achieved an ATAR of 99 or above, placing them in the top 1% of the state.
- 23 students achieved an ATAR of 98 or above, placing them in the top 2% of the state.
- 55.26% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the state.

All schools are great schools! The only things that are different are the facilities they have, the application methods, and whether or not they're co-ed.

Unfortunately, that is not a guarantee. You have to work hard for the ATAR you want as well. These schools perform well due to a variety of reasons, so it is more important to focus on the one factor you can control, which is your own efforts.
